Thesis Statement : While Reconstruction did re-unify the nation, it did a poor job of sucessfully integrating African Americans into society, politics, and the economic structure of the United States. While Radical Republicans had worked to integrate African Americans into America by use of Civil Rights Laws, they were undermined by radically discriminatory groups in the south, as well as the Supreme Court and conservatives in Congress. Next, the Radicals did not understand how deep racisim ran in the south, and therefore underestimated the need for a social and phycological change in the attitude of the country to really move forward from their discrminatory ways. Radicals also did not want to give away the land of planters to former slaves, causing them to stay at the bottom of both the social and economic ladders in the Unites States for years.
